Team Expectations

Team members are expected to:

1. Follow all our safety rules:
– No horse play.
– No running.
– Shoulder-length hair or longer must be tied back prior to entering build space.
– Safety glasses/side shields must be worn in build space.
– Closed-toe and closed-heel shoes (no wheels or heels) must be worn.
– No use of tools without training.
– Use of shop tools requires direct mentor supervision.
– Do not tap the shoulder of someone using a power tool (wait until they are done to address them).
– No loose sleeves, bracelets, etc. when using tools.
– No necklaces, scarfs, ties, etc. may be worn in the build area.
– Hoodie strings should be tied/tucked in.
– No food or drinks are allowed near tools or computers.
– If a Mentor, Safety Team member, Team Captain, or Sub-Team Leader tells you to do or stop doing any of the things above you are expected to comply immediately or you will have to leave.

2. Exemplify Gracious Professionalism® in everything you do. Learn more about Gracious Professionalism® on the FIRST website Professionalism is part of the ethos of FIRST. It’s a way of doing things that encourages high-quality work, emphasizes the value of others, and respects individuals and the community. With Gracious Professionalism, fierce competition and mutual gain are not separate notions. Gracious professionals learn and compete like crazy, but treat one another with respect and kindness in the process. No chest thumping tough talk, but no sticky-sweet platitudes either. Knowledge, competition, and empathy are comfortably blended.

3. Help create a positive, supportive place for others to learn, create and flourish.

4. Be prepared to receive and offer constructive criticism.

5. Let others have a chance to learn what you know and be willing to teach them.

6. Learn how to use various tools safety.

7. Look for ways to help when you are idle.

8. No use of foul language or gestures.

9. Contribute food, drinks and paper products to the team if you eat snacks and/or lunch.

10. Sign in and sign out at builds, events and competitions.
– At competitions, If you are arriving late or leaving early from a competition or if you have a last minute change of plans, please ensure that this is communicated with the appropriate mentors so that we are aware of where students are/should be.
– Your parent must let Mrs. Bryson or Mrs. Sprague know that you are leaving early and with whom you will be leaving.
– If you are staying at a hotel and you withdraw from coming to competition after room assignments have been made or leave early, you will still be financially responsible for your portion of the room and you should let the parent responsible for the room know that you are leaving.

11. Attend the game reveal/kick-off and the team’s strategy meeting that follows.

12. Sign up when you need a carpool ride (and contact the carpool driver if your plans change).

13. Dress Code matches that of Dexter Community Schools: Dress Code Clothing should be appropriate for school and closed-toe shoes should be worn at all times.Items not deemed appropriate will be addressed by mentors. Examples of inappropriate dress include, but are not limited to:
– Undergarments showing
– Spaghetti straps
– Pants sagging
– Shoes with wheels
– Shorts/skirts that are not modest in length
– Shorts/skirts with pockets hanging out below garment length
– No Undergarments may show.
– Clothing that promotes any product or service not permitted to minors by law (drugs, alcohol, tobacco, sex, weapons, etc.) or is obscene, libelous, indecent or vulgar.
– Extremes are not permitted (swimwear, bare midriffs, ripped pants, bra, low cut, form-fitting, etc.).

14. For competitions, outreach events, service events, and sponsor visits (in addition to the above):
– It is expected that students will be in their Dreadbot T-shirts.
– Pants should be free of tears and holes.
– Shorts /skirts should be approximately fingertip length when arms are hanging loose at your sides (even with tights).
– No cutoffs are permitted.
– If in doubt, if you wouldn’t want to see your mentor wearing it, don’t wear it yourself.

15. Students and parents are responsible for staying up-to-date on team information via emails and the team website www.dexterdreadbots.org.

16. Students are responsible for using the Remind app at competitions to receive important announcements.

17. Belong to and actively participate with at least one of our sub-teams:
– Business Team
– Electrical Team
– Marketing Team
– Mechanical Team
– Programming Team
– Safety Team
– Service Team
– Strategy/Scouting Team

18. Help with daily clean-up of build space.

19. It is important that all team members remember that whenever they are engaged in a team-related activity, whether online or in person, they are representing the Dreadbots. Their actions will reflect upon our team, our sponsors, our school, our city, our state and our nation.

Failure to meet team expectations or DCS standards can result in consequences which can include expulsion from the team without a refund of any fees.
